The Shirley family already owned an estate in Shirley Castle Portland, dedicated to the cultivation of bananas and cattle, St. Claire’s pioneering spirit led him to convert over 150 acres into a thriving coffee plantation.
During this era, exporting coffee was intricately tied to the regulations of the Jamaica Coffee Board. A farmer aiming to export had to produce a substantial 10,000 boxes. Undeterred by this challenge, St. Clair Shirley rallied a group of like-minded farmers, forming a united front. This collaborative effort birthed a company that initially focused on meeting export criteria. However, as circumstances evolved, the group disbanded, paving the way for the formation of the cornerstone of our heritage—the parent company, Jamaica Coffee Corporation Ltd.
Driven by a commitment to excellence, the journey continued, marked by the acquisition of additional estates and the pivotal establishment of Stoneleigh Coffee Processors Ltd in 2009. This state-of-the-art facility was dedicated to in-house coffee processing, ensuring meticulous care at every stage of production.
In 2011, recognizing the importance of completing the coffee circle, the visionary leaders of Stoneleigh Coffee, led by St. Clair Shirley and joined by his sons David and Stephen, decided to venture into the world of roasted products. This expansion marked a pivotal moment in the family’s legacy, adding the final touch to their comprehensive approach to the coffee industry.
Today, David and Stephen Shirley passionately uphold the mantle, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the companies.
