From Farm to Cup: How Coffee is Made

By sc_admin November 16, 2022

For many, coffee is an essential part of daily life—but have you ever wondered how those rich, aromatic beans make their way from a farm to your cup? The journey of coffee is a fascinating process that involves careful cultivation, harvesting, and roasting to bring out the flavors we love.

At Stoneleigh Coffee, we take pride in sourcing and roasting high-quality beans, ensuring every step of the process contributes to a smooth and flavorful brew. Here’s a closer look at how coffee is made.

Step 1: Cultivation & Growing

Coffee beans come from the Coffea plant, a tropical evergreen shrub that thrives in warm climates. The best coffee is grown at high altitudes, where cooler temperatures allow the beans to develop slowly, enhancing their flavor.

Our coffee is grown with care, ensuring that the soil, climate, and cultivation methods bring out the best in each bean.

Step 2: Harvesting the Coffee Cherries

Coffee beans start as cherries that turn bright red when ripe. There are two main harvesting
methods:

  • Hand-picking – Labor-intensive but ensures only the ripest cherries are selected.
  • Mechanical harvesting – Faster but may pick unripe cherries as well.
High-quality coffee is usually hand-picked, as this allows farmers to choose only the best
    cherries for processing.

Step 3: Processing & Drying

Once harvested, the cherries need to be processed to extract the beans inside. There are two
primary methods:

The drying process can take weeks, depending on the method and climate.

Step 4: Milling & Sorting

Once dried, the beans are hulled to remove any remaining layers and then sorted by size, weight, and quality. Only the best beans make it through this selection process, ensuring a consistent, high-quality roast.

Step 5: Roasting – Where the Magic Happens

Roasting transforms green coffee beans into the aromatic, flavorful beans we recognize. At Stoneleigh Coffee, we roast in small batches to ensure maximum freshness and flavor.

Each roast level brings out different characteristics in the beans, which is why choosing the
right roast for your taste preferences is so important.

Step 6: Brewing the Perfect Cup

Once roasted, the beans are ready for brewing! Whether you prefer French press, espresso, pour-over, or drip coffee, the key is using freshly roasted, high-quality beans to get the best taste.

At Stoneleigh Coffee, we believe that coffee is more than just a drink—it’s an experience. From farm to cup, every step of the journey plays a role in the final flavor.
